Teaching vocabulary is one of the most important steps to improving students' background knowledge, thus improving their ability to master new content knowledge. One of the great things about this is that vocabulary practice is incredibly easy to incorporate. Below are some lists of vocabulary words that have common themes, as well as Internet resources and United Streaming videos that support that theme, as well as games and collaborative activities to allow students many opportunities to work with the new words. Please feel free to edit these lists as your curriculum and class readiness dictates. If you have other favorites or have created other lists, I would love to share them (with credit to you, of course). Just click on the link below to attach your files. Let me know if you would like to brainstorm the use of these. Thanks and have fun! |
We all have opinions about the best way to teach vocabulary. Marzano's Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement (2004) recommends five key components of effective vocabulary instruction: The six activities included with each list of words provide opportunities for you and your students to try these components. *Big thanks to Sherri Sampson at RPDC for her cool activities.* |
