- (Day 1) You are going to create an imaginary island that you will talk about in several assignments this week. To begin, brainstorm a list of names for the island. Circle the name that you like the most. Then choose what part of the globe your island is located at. What countries are around your island? What kind of weather would you have based on your location? Use the website http://www.mbgnet.net/ from the Missouri Botanical Garden to help you. This brainstorm should take you 1/2 of the first class period. Then you should be ready to begin the following assignments. (25 points)
- (Day 2) Go to the Nim's Island website http://www.nimsisland.com/ and play the "Create Your Own Island" game for ten minutes. Then make a map of an imaginary island in Paint or Word. Use a key to label at least six important places on the map. Save in Thawspace and print a copy to turn in. (50 points)
- (Day 3) Write a letter - Nim identified very closely with Alex Roper, the great adventurer. This is why she was so excited to write emails back and forth with Alex Roper's creator, the author Alexandra. Think about your favorite author. If you received an email from this author requesting that you help them with their next book, what would you do? Write a letter to your favorite author telling them why you like their books and what you would suggest that they include in a sequel book. The letter must be well written with correct grammar. It must be at least fifteen sentences long and cover the topics mentioned above. Save in Thawspace and print a copy to turn in. (50 Points)
- (Days 4 and 5) An Independent Nation - Nim faced many problems as she tried to protect her island from the outside world. Pretend that you are in charge of the island that you brainstormed about on Day one. Make a five slide PowerPoint telling me about your island. The first slide should include your name, your homeroom teacher's name, and the name of your Island/Country. The second slide should include information about the government on your island. Is it a monarchy or a democratic type government? Who is the king/queen or President of your island? Do you have your own money or do you use an already recognized form of money? Slide three - Create a flag for your country and paste it on slide three. Slide four - Choose one type of emergency that your island may face. Type four rules that the people on your island should follow if that emergency happens. The emergency could be a violent storm, flooding, intruders, or a fire. Slide five - Copy and paste at least four pictures of plants or animals that are found on your island. You will copy these from the sites on Mrs. Haas' list. (100 points - 60 for information and 40 for visual appeal)
- (Day 6) Now go back and change the background on each slide in your PowerPoint presentation. Change the font style on each slide. Once you have used a font on slide one, you cannot use it again on any of the slides. Once you have used the next font on slide two, you cannot use it again on any of the slides. This is true for all of the slides. Automatically animate everything on each slide. 6th grade - set up slide transitions and make sure that the timings are long enough but not too long. (100 points - 60 for information and 40 for visual appeal)
- (Day 7) Education City - Play the phobia game called Space Venture . (This is an extra if finished with everything else on the list.) (Extra credit - Make up 10 Participation points from a previous absence or add 10 points to PP if perfect attendance.)
