Time for Flu Shots!
The week of Dec. 3-7 is National Influenza Vaccine Awareness Week. It is not too late to get immunized if you haven't been already. Remember, each year, it's necessary to get the current flu shot as influenza is a virus that changes frequently.
Good news for this year: the strains of the flu virus that were expected and contained in the vaccine are indeed the ones that seems to be afflicting people this year. (It will work!)
Bad news for this year: flu season seems to be starting early! Health agencies are already reporting cases in numbers not normally seen until late January or February.
Bottom line: get immunized! The more people who get immunized, the better! Herd immunity (yes, that's really what we call it!) protects those who are unable to get immunized. According to the CDC, only about 40% of eligible people have received the vaccine this year! Afraid of needles? There's a nasal mist or the vaccine is also available with a very fine needle that's virtually painless. Money? Most insurances cover it 100% with NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. As a preventive service, it is not affected by a deductible. Questions? Just ask!
