Mrs. Hanewinkel's Hive 3rd Grade Handbook
School Hours School starts at 8:35. If you should arrive late with your child, you must sign him/her in at the office. Private transportation dismisses at 3:15. Students will be picked up around the back of the school just like last school year. Bus riders will be dismissed at 3:27.
Important Times
Lunch/Recess: 12:15-12:50 p.m.
Attendance It is extremely important for your child to be at school. Please let me know if your child is going to be absent. In most cases, I can have make up work ready by the end of the day. Third grade has a very large workload and broad curriculum. Even a one or two day absence can create an enormous burden if left too long. Extended time is given for returning make-up work, especially for long illnesses. However, there may be instances when your child will not have work to complete at home.
Perfect Attendance Parties Each day all the students are present at school and not tardy I will place a letter on our board. When we spell out Perfect Attendance we will celebrate and have a special party. Thank you in advance for making an effort towards your child’s great attendance! J
Birthday Treats Birthday treats may be brought to school any day near your child’s birthday and they will be handed out at a convenient time during our day. Please send in items that do not require any special preparation and can be easily served by the birthday child. Disposable containers are the best. No drinks please! If your child has a summer birthday, he or she may bring their treats in on their half birthday or at the end of the school year.
Water Bottles and Snacks Water bottles may be brought to school and kept at your child’s desk. I ask that they not drink out of them during my direct instruction. If the water bottle becomes a problem for your child he/she will be asked not to bring one to school. Also, a nutritional snack may be brought from home to eat mid morning before special area.
Classroom Discipline At H.S.E. we follow the expectations set forth from our positive behavior support team. Students will be instructed on what behaviors are expected in all settings at H.S.E. The expectations will be posted in the classroom as a reminder for students. Students will be using the colored chart from last year to monitor their behavior and classroom choices. They will each have a clip or a magnet that they will physically move up or down the chart, depending on their choices. Please keep in mind that your child may not move every single day! In order to move up, students must go above and beyond in their behavior choices. The levels are: outstanding, great choice, good choice, ready to learn, slow down, think about it, and parent contact. Most students will be familiar with this system from 2nd grade. We will have a class meeting to decide on rewards. Consequences will be loss of recess time, office referral and/or parent contact. I believe this system will be a positive way for students to monitor their choices and will give them a behavior goal to strive for.
Friday Folder This folder is a very important form of communication between your child, you and me. It will be sent home every Friday for you to review your child’s papers. Please go over the papers and feel free to use them as tools to help re-teach skills that your child may have encountered some difficulty. After you have reviewed your child’s work please remove all papers from the folder before returning the folder to school. Also included in the folder will be your child’s weekly newsletter. Be sure to read and review all contents of the Friday Folder. Thank you for all the extra time and help given to make your child successful.
Weekly Newsletters (Buzzworthy News) Every Friday I will send home our classroom newsletter in the Friday Folder. Please read through the newsletter for important information regarding classroom learning objectives/targets, upcoming assignments, important dates, and school events. After reading the newsletter and reviewing the graded papers there will be a small ticket on the bottom of the newsletter for parents to complete! The ticket will be completed, cut from the newsletter and turned into me for a Monday morning prize drawing! Learning responsibility in 3rd grade is very important!
Homework Our class will have homework that comes home every Friday and due on Thursday of the following week. In most cases each homework assignment should not take more than 30 minutes to complete. You may give your child as much help as they may need without taking over the responsibility.
At Home Reading Third graders should be spending extended time reading each evening. At least 20-30 minutes of sustained reading nightly is beneficial for their success. They should be reading books at their level and hopefully enjoying chapter books either independently or with minimal support. As part of their homework, students will be asked to complete weekly book responses on what they have been reading. Also, quarterly book projects will be required as well. I will be sending more information regarding the book projects when the time comes.
Graded Papers Graded Papers will come home on Friday of each week. Please note not all graded papers will be recorded in my grade book. Some pages will have the number of incorrect items and others will have our standard based grades. Please review these pages with your child.
Grades Third grade will receive standard based grades at the end of each quarter on their report card. This will be just as it was last year in second grade. Progress reports will not be sent home first quarter since so much of the first few weeks of school are spent reviewing and assessing students’ levels. Progress reports will be sent home 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters.
Conferences Parent teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of first quarter. You may sign up for your 1st quarter conference at open house. Those times will be honored and others will be scheduled a couple of weeks before conferences. All families will receive a reminder notice before conference time. If something comes up and a change in conference time is needed please call me as soon as possible so we can arrange a new time. If problems or concerns arise before conferences, please do not hesitate to contact me either by note, email or phone call. My daily plan time is 10:35-11:25.
Book Orders Book order forms will come home almost every month. If we are having a school wide book fair, I will not send home any book orders during that time period. Please put your child’s order and form of payment in a labeled envelope. Please pay by check or money order payable to the book order company. Online ordering will be available if you prefer.
I look forward to a terrific school year!!
